Foods That Have High Sugar - Content And Should Be Avoided

Sugary foods and refined carbohydrate foods have very high sugar content. They change into glucose too fast for your insulin to work efficiently.

  • White and brown sugar, gula melaka
  • Sweets, chocolates, CHOCOLATES
  • Glucose, honey, syrup
  • Jam, kaya, marmalade
  • Jellies, sweetened desserts, puddings, pies, ice-cream, canned fruit in syrup, carbonated (soft) drinks, cordials
  • Malted beverage which already contain sugar
  • Cakes, sweet biscuits, sweet breads and buns, pastries
  • Local kuih that contain flour, sugar, santan (such as kuih lapis, kuih koci, pulut inti, seri muka, kuih bingka, kuih kaswi, kuih bakar, onde-onde)
  • Sweetened condensed milk, filled milk
  • Sugar coated cereals
  • Alcohol and alcoholic drinks contain a large amount of carbohydrate and should not be taken on an empty stomach
  • When eating out, follow these food guidelines:

Teh Tarik kurang manis Teh See (tea with evaporated milk)
Local sweet kuih Savoury kuih
Sweet sour sauces Masak assam pedas or soup or cur
Carbonated drinks, sweetened drinks, cordial Plain barley water, Chinese tea and ½ cup freshly squeezed fruit juices
Kuah rojak or kuah satay Eat small amount
3 in 1 beverages and sweetened cereals Go for plain or individually served
