Professor Stephen Twigg

 Professor Stephen Twigg, MBBS(Hons-I), PhD, FRACP, is Head of the Dept of Endocrinology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney, Kellion Professor of Endocrinology and Stan Clark Chair in Diabetes, Sydney Medical School, the University of Sydney. As an endocrinologist-scientist his program of research since 1995 has been dedicated to preventing and managing end-organ complications in diabetes.

His main translational interest is how diabetes causes tissue damage with loss of function, and ways this can be addressed to improve patient outcomes. Diabetes and glucose control is a main focus, as is foot care, and tissue fibrosis caused by growth factors in diabetes in fatty liver disease, diabetic cardiomyopathy and diabetic nephropathy.

He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed research and educational articles, plus delivered national and international presentations in diabetes, including at the IDF World Global Congress, the ADA Annual Scientific sessions, and across Asia. He is a past-President of the Australia Diabetes Society and a current Australian delegate to the IDF General Assembly.
